Most overrated movies of all time....

Please list what movies you guys think are the most overrated movie of all time. And please don't list Napoleon Dynamite because you guys have already complained about it.

I will toss my chip in with:I will piss of a lot diehard geeks here, but hear me out. I feel like the Lord of the Rings series was overrated. I am not saying I didn't like it. I just felt like it was propped up on this pedestal of one of the greatest 15 movies of all-time when I think its quite a bit below that. According, to the Top 250 on IMDB this is how they are rated: Return of the King is the third greatest movie of all time, The Fellowship of the Ring is the 8th greatest, and the Two Towers was rated 11th. I realize on IMDB there is a bias to newer movies because so many more young people use the internet. But come on, their rankings blew away Gone with the Wind, Raging Bull, and other notable greats. As a kid, I loved the books and I am a big fan of Peter Jackson(see Dead Alive), but I felt even Jerry Bruckheimer (that might be going a bit far)could have done the movie and people would still have loved it. When I see a movie, I want to see an original concept. As hokie as Star Wars was it was great because it was fresh. Sure it drew from various sources like Kurosawa's Kakushi toride no san akunin(ironically isn't in the top 250) but made a completely new creature.

I watched only an hour and a half of the second Lord of the Rings installment, and found it poorly acted, and about as exciting as watching moss grow on a stone.

I haven't seen any of the other two.

Gee, I can't wait for King Kong to come out....

I hate it when they go overboard for a movie, and when it comes out it sucks. Like for the new Superman, they have all these promotions for it, like Doritios, and slurpees, and for the little boys this stupid Superman shirt, that inflates to look like the kid had a big chest, and there is the Superman cape that he wears, and it makes the sound of him flying. God can that be more pathetic.

I'm gonna go way out on a limb and say Gone With The Wind.

Someone forgot to tell Vivian Leigh and about half of the cast that in film you do not need to "play to the cheap seats" and overact as broadly and as loudly as possible.

My high-school history teacher trotted this movie out when we did the chapter on the Civil War and i had to fight the urge to staple myself to death.

Also, any movie where the lead actor is playing a developmentaly disabled character (I am Sam, Radio, Rain Man, et al) bunch of fucking cliches where the actor raises the pitch of his voice, keeps his/her tongue just a hair's-width away from lolling out of his mouth, wears a semi-lost facial expression and seems to be fighting the urge to fall into parody and start flailing their hands around

any movie where the lead actor is playing a developmentaly disabled character (I am Sam, Radio, Rain Man, et al) >>

I second that. Playing such a character is a sure-fire way to get an Oscar nomination. The ultimate example of that is Forrest Gump.

LOTR has been overrated since the Bashki version - yeee-ahwn.

Here's one that PISSED ME OFF:

Open Water, a.k.a Die Yuppie Chum.

Not scary. Boring. Wanted them to die after 5 minutes, so the ending wasn't a surprise but a relief. HATED it.

The Piano. I thought it was absolutely dreadful.

I wanted to laugh at the most inappropriate places, because Holly's hoop skirt kept popping up as a bit player for comic relief (when she collapsed in the mud when hubbie lopped her finger off; when she was being pulled under water at the end). I literally had to bite my knuckle to keep from ruining the dramatic moment for the rest of the theater.

    Awful, awful, awful.

I thought LOTR was fine for what it was--an adaptation of a book that pretty much nobody thought could be filmed successfully. It managed to vastly exceed expectations and was possibly the best fantasy movie ever made. But that high on the list of best movies overall? I have to agree with you. Not that good.

I must admit I hate the idea of any fantasy/sci fi film taking the place of the original Star Wars trilogy. This is even after learning about how much Lucas stole from Kurosawa.

        swingers, definitely overrated

and i hate to say it, but Sideways just didn't do anything for me either, because even though i am decidedly a creature-feature loving geek, i can appreciate more subtle movies - but Sideways just about "subtled" me into a coma.

I would have to say Titanic as well. I think it's because I went to see it after everyone was saying how amazing it was so I was expected way more.

at the risk of opening a whole kettle of worms...The Passion was overrated.

I liked Titanic well enough, but I couldn't get too hyped over a movie where you already know how it's going to end. The boat sank. The end.

to be a total dude- the sketching scene was darned nice- curvy Kate all topless and all

and the boat capsizing was nice

I could have done without the King of the WOrld stuff

Passion was lame and like Titanic it suffered from having an overly familiar story- people got offended when I suggested that Passion may have been better with a twist ending and no subtitles

The Matrix. All of them. The Matrix franchise sucks!!! There, I've said it.

Total ripoff of Blade Runner and William Gibson, both stylistically and thematically. I was sort of grimly satisfied that part 3 was so blatantly bad, because all it did was reveal the howling vapidity upon which the entire premise was founded.

the Star Wars films ( with the exception of the original )
                sucked ass for sure!

                  Damn man,

Thats a BOLD fuckin' move on your part!
I can respect that! My friend; who I hold a high regard for in matters of film critiques, always says that shit! I think that the first one is a classic and Empire is the best, and Return is the weakest except for the last third of the movie!

Now, the new ones are a whole different matter! I liked them personaly and think in order for STAR WARS fans to really have a passion for them like they do for the ORIGINAL trilogy. They need to find their inner child so that they can re-connect to the new trilogy like they did when they saw the first!

                  And thats that! hehehehehe

                  peace

Hmm, I'm with you all on part 2 and 3 of The Matrix, but that first one is niiiiiiiiiice. Detested the 2nd one so much I didn't see the third.

Most movies by Spielberg are massively overrated. He simply MUST put at least one 'spielberg-ism' his movies e.g. Saving Private Ryan (I liked much about the whole movie); in the opening storming Normandy sequence, a guy is hit right in the forehead but his helmet stops the bullets: he smiles and pokes his buddy to say something like"
How's that for good luck. ." when another bullet blows his brains out.
                    I HATE THAT SHIT!

Thought the first two Star Wars movies were fun, but as soon as those fucking Ewoks showed the shark was jumped for me.

Haven't seen the second matrix movie, was annoyed by the first one (except for the special effects) and really confused by the third one. My understanding is that even had I scene the second I would still remain confused. Is that a side effect of actually paying to see these movies?

Episode 1 sucks. Its so bad, its the worst one of all the Star Wars movies so far. When Star Wars came out, it was so cheesy I couldn't understand why people were so gaga over it. Now I know--they don't have any sense of proportion or, god forbid, an understanding of film history, let alone literature. Sad. Really sad.

Independence Day. Do you remember all the hype before that came out at the theatre? Really not that great. I prefer a good camp with Mars Attacks any day.

And I don't know what will happen here if I say Sin City, but I thought it was the most groaningly bad, bad movie ever. Fabulous actors, but the lines were just laughable, so bad that even good acting could not compensate.

Sky Captain! There's a completely overrated movie. Steal some ideas from some old Superman cartoons, she, and Lost Horizon, sign some big stars to prance around with moody looks on their cottonized pusses, sleep with some folks over at the Academy and 'Voila!' instant 'masterpiece'.

"Sky Captain" bit hard. Ugh. Crap.

I agree on the Star Wars films. LOVED the first one, liked "Empire", lost interest when "Jedi" came out ... I was actually looking forward to the new ones, but Lucas is trying so hard to live up to the hype he overshoots. I'm tired of the twists; ever since "I'm your father" it's always gotta be something - "She's your sister", "There was no father", yadayadayada. Puhleeze, just make it stop.

Speaking of Lucas: "American Grafitti"; seriously overrated.

I disagree about "American Grafitti". Its better than many other movies. It properly falls into the realm of innocent teenager coming of age films. Its uneven in places...just like kids are. It certainly has more merit from a literary standpoint than Star Wars...

I really, really hate teen coming-of-age films.

Most people I know that like "Grafitti" were kids in the 50's - the people who were adults in the 50's & who aren't old enough to remember (that I know) don't care for it, but are embarrassed to admit it since it made AFI's "100 Best of All Time" list.

Apparently, though, those who like coming of age films will like it; I just don't hang out with many of those =D

Did anyone else hate "Blue Velvet"? I adore David Lynch, but I was disappointed in this. Who did what to who was obvious right from the beginning, and I didn't really CARE who lived or died. In the theater, I left after Dennis Hoppers first scene, and I only stayed THAT long because Hopper's da man. Later a boyfriend talked me into watching the whole thing. At that point, I was HOPING everyone would die.

Everyone I've ever met, though looooooves this movie. Am I alone? What about "Collateral" - did that annoy anyone else?!?

I don't recommend watching it twice, if that's what you mean. However, the acting is good, although the tension is rather contrived. Did anyone thing this was really overrated...or overhyped. That's the problem with a lot of movies these days, all the credulous hype put on them. Actually, like these movies, the hype isn't all that new either.

You're not alone - I love Connery so much I've seen "Zardoz" 3 times; but I've never been able to watch an entire Bond film due to extreme lack of interest.

Zardoz is fabulous - I have Sean in his orange g-string like jumpsuit on my photos. But if you want to see a reaaly lucious young sexy Sean, see Alfred Hitchcock's "Marnie" - hot, hot kiss scene w/ Tippi Hedren. Or you could go for Darby O'Gill, but it's not sexy. That's one of very few films were Sean sings, though.

its ok. i think David Lynch can't direct his way out of a wet paper bag. His version of Dune is so bad it causes me to go into seizures. Seizures where I go out and kill pretentious beatniks. unfortunately I bought the movie many moons back because I loved the book. Just when I watched it with my friend put a curse upon me and upon my children for the rest of eternity. They claimed that the suffering I put upon them for a such a god awful movie was more than any curse could bear. I was wondering was Kyle Maclachlan was hooking up with Lynch, because he appears in a lot of his crap.

I think Lynch likes Maclachlan 'cause he has no facial expressions, unlike Steven Segal, who in addition to "blank" also does "sqinting into the sun" and "constipated".

Does anyone else agree with me here that they like David Lynch but don't know why? Once I see one of his movies, I have to watch it again - usually just to see if I can figure out any meaning (if one exists), or at least for some good visuals and awesome music.

I am a Twin Peaks conniseur (the series much more than the movie). I love Wild at Heart. I can appreciate Eraserhead, but I can't really say I like it. Everyone I have loaned it out to says that they are never watching anything I recommend again. I tell them to watch it for the experience, not because it's necessarily any good.

I had some issues with Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive The whole thing with people changing characters halfway through the movie really pissed me off, and served no purpose of any kind. And the next time I hear some freaky chick with blue hair shout Silencio I'm gonna hit her with a brick.

The most overrated movie of all time is Citzen Cane. A big steaming pile of Who Cares.

On the sci-fi front it's Blade Runner. Gets more boaring every thime a see it. Also, Ridley Scott's comments about the Deckard's true nature acording to the director's cut show that Scott is an idiot.

      > The most overrated movie of all time is Citzen Cane. A big steaming pile of Who Cares

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. Kane was absolutely revolutionary. So many film techniques were invented for this movie. If you watch it today, you're bound to say "what's the big deal" simply because you've seen them repeated in so many films over the last 65 years. It tops the AFI list of the 100 best movies of all time for a reason - and although it did contribute much in the way of technical innovations, it also holds up as a great film with such a massive scope.

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citi...nnovations

As much as I enjoyed this film, I'd still rather watch Office Space, Shaolin Soccer, or Showgirls. But that's just me.

I'm gonna have to say that the biggest grossing film of all time - TITANIC (which also ties Ben Hur and LotR Return of the King in Academy Awards - 11!) - is the most overrated film of all time. I wanted to cheer when Leonardo died.

I don't watch a film for it's techniques. I watch it for an interesting story or characters I care about. I truly great film will still have much to offer after it's innovative tecniques have become common. Citizen Kane does not. Don't care about anyone in it or what happens to them. All the deep focus in the world doesn't make up for that. I'll take Casablanca over Kane any time. Hell, I'll take Josie and the Pussycats over Citizen Kane.

I too hate Titanic, but to be overrated in has to be highly rated in the first place. Was it? Sure the teenage girls liked it, but did the critics? I honestly don't remember. What were the Oscars for? Any for effects, costume, or set are justified. Any for writing or acting are not.

          > I too hate Titanic, but to be overrated in has to be highly rated in the first place. Was it?

I think so. It played in the theatres forever. For a while, people stopped asking "Have you seen it?" and started asking "How many times have you seen it?"

          > Sure the teenage girls liked it, but did the critics?

Roger Ebert: "It is flawlessly crafted, intelligently constructed, strongly acted and spellbinding."

          > What were the Oscars for?

11 Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture. Céline Dion even won for best original song. Oof.

Just wanted to take a moment to agree with those who think the Matrix sucked. People expect me to like it because I'm a science fiction fan, but it has two major flaws. 1) I don't believe Keanu Reeves could be the "chosen" anything. 2) Using humans for energy is incredibly stupid. It would be easier to just burn whatever it was they were feeding us. If they really had to do it that way, they'd have been better off using cows instead.

I actually hated 2 and 3 slightly less because they didn't dwell on these subjects quite as much. But they still sucked.

And to those who say, "but at least the fights were cool," I say, "You haven't seen enough Hong Kong movies."

I know that I haven't been active in this tribe for a while, but I really have to say my piece...

I agree with: The Matrix comments, The LOTR comments, and the Star Wars comments

However, I believe we forgot to mention As Good as it Gets...Completely overrated. Everyone I know loved it, I couldn't stand it...OCD Jack Nicholson- good in theory...bad in practice. I felt myself scrunching up my face for fear that his character's mannerisms would eat it.. And Helen Hunt was too needy. Not to mention that Greg Kinnear has never really been able to act, however he does cliches really well!.

I just don't get it...and now that I've said what I needed to say, you are more than welcome to disagree with me.

          newb greetings to all,

any and all Star Wars film
any and all James Bond film

i won't beat a dead horse because my reasons are the same as the ones i read earlier in this thread.

The James Bond films, oh how I hate those. Why do they do a James Bond marathon on Spike TV 2 or 3 times a month? It's like Chinese water torture.

Cold Mountain- could a movie be any more depressing and long. and just when you think it might be over and you won't actually have to kill yourself, then it gets even more depressing. Renee Zellweger was the best part of the movie, but not good enough. It sucked.

Difficult to say but of the past decade I would have to go with "Saving Private Ryan" and "Crash." Not only were they outrageously contrived and heavy handed in terms of narrative, but both were critically praise to no end (I wont even mention their oscars but I've hardly paid attention to those since "Titanic" swept "L.A. Confidential" in 98.') Never "got it" with those two.

Jerry Maguire and almost all things Tom Cruise. He can't act his way out of a paper bag. Oh yeah...and a big thumbs down for Mission Impossible.

Pearl Harbor. Pretty bad when Trey Parker and Matt Stone devote a song to how bad the movie sucked.

At the time, I thought I was the only person on the planet who didn't think My Big Fat Greek Wedding was completely stupid and overrated. I've since learned different.

      It sucked.

I completely agree w/ the Tom Cruise stuff. He's awful and a little bit creepy, well, ok, a lot creepy.

Ben Affleck needs acting lessons. Ha Ha Ha. And Cuba Gooding should have had a better part. I love those South Park guys.

I didn't even bother with it.
"Gone With the Wind" was a complete melodramtic bore. Hated it.
Still don't know why people like that so much.
And while I wouldn't say "Citizen Kane" was overrated, it's certainly not Welle's best film, not by a long shot.
"Magnificent Ambersons," even with the botched ending, was better. As was "Touch of Evil."
And all of Jim Carrey's comedy. Most overrated comic actor ever. He bugs the crap out of me. "Ace Ventura"??? Not funny for a second.

THANK YOU for saying that--i totally agree.

I liked him in the old In Living Color series, but he was part of an ensemble then, and I think that helped rein him in. I thought I was the only one on the planet who didn't the Ace Ventura film (I could only stomach the first one).

I loved Th Magificent Ambersons, warts and all. I actually really liked Welles as Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Paul Newman and Anthony Franciosa, but that's probably for another thread...

I know I will get stoned for this, or tarred and feathered, but I will have to pipe up and says

    The Matrix!

The second one was sooooo much better than the original. But I am not that big of a fan of this trilogy. Also Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I mean yes it did have some funny moments, but the damn movie seemed to drag. I loved the Lord of the ring series, but I absolutely abhor Tolkien. Peter Jackson isn't really a god, But Joss Whedon is. Peter took his ideas from someone else. (isn't plagerizing taking credit for someone else's ideas?) But Joss Whedon came up with Buffy/Angel/Firefly all on his own. He is a genious. I also think that Night at the Roxbury wasn't that great, neither were the Die hard movies, Predator, Aliens or the Fly. I mean yes they were spiffy to look at , but they weren't that great. Hell I think Nightmare on elm street had spiffier plots and make up.

Oh and Seabiscuit. an hour and half of tobey mcguire riding a horse, which he had to lose 85 lbs to do. Sorry but people losing weight and gaining weight in major amounts is dumb .

My god that film was boring! As well as Ferhinheit 9-11 .

If I wanted to watch an hour of bush bashing, I would bloody well turn on C-Span or CNN. I dont need some prick to tell me about bush golfing during the crisis. Lame.

Yay, I'm not alone on the Seabiscuit hate. Course, I probably hate it for different reasons -- I couldn't put the book down. The movie was a botched up snooze fest. McGuire was horribly miscast. So was the horse....

A big "Bless You!" to whoever said 'Forrest Gump'!! It sucked fat donkey dick! Titanic better than L.A. Confidential?!? On what Bizarro world is that even possible, let alone reality? Finally, I love Roger Ebert, but take everything he has to say about movies with a box of salt after suffering through 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls'...

    “Silence of the Lambs.”

It wasn’t tense. It wasn’t scary. It wasn’t creepy. It was totally predictable from the first reel ... and included a completely wrong ending.

Had it been Hannibal fired the gun through the cellar window and Clarice been made so vulnerable that she would see him through the broken glass but let him go...? Zoom boom. Brilliant mind game. Bold confident escape. But no. Clarice gets off a lucky shot in the dark and fails to trace the call when he phones her. Feh. She's just a crappy cop.

Out of Africa. It swept the Oscars when it came out so I rented it. My wife and I got almost halfway through the movie and turned it off. We had never not watched a movie all the way through before but it was so BORING we couldn't stand watching it. To this day I can't figure out what all the hype was about. Complete rubbish!

Any Steven Speilberg film. well most of them.

His films are chruned through the hollywood formulae and over-hyped.

If Tom Cruise is in a film, it will be over-hyped and undoubtedly crap.

If Hugh Grant is in a film, he'll play the exact same role in a mediocre film but his films alwasy get a best selling soundtrack.

Anything with Meryl Streep in it, for that matter. Well except that one where she played a dead chick with Goldie Hawn and had ectoplasmic chick fights and stuff. That was underrated.

THE GRIFTERS why should I care about these horrible, horrible people? Praised to the skies at the time.
THE COLOR PURPLE Spielberg could ruin anything. I think Minority Report is his only movie I still like.
AMERICAN GRAFFITI I can't watch 3 minutes of this garbage. Much as I may love Cindy Williams.
CITIZEN KANE I finally saw on the small screen and while I appreciated it visually, I was surprised to find there was no story to it.
FORREST GUMP I have avoided on general principles.
TITANIC won all those oscars for employing half of Hollywood.
ANYTHING WITH BEN STILLER gee, I wish my parents were comic geniuses.

Exception to the rule about acters playing developmentally disabled characters: Tom Hulce in Dominick and Eugene.
Also agree Tom Cruise is creepy (but good at playing creepy: see Magnolia, Minority Report).
David Lynch is pretentious & boring a great deal of the time, but Elephant Man was so beautiful I watched it twice in a row.
