Okay I'm giving this rev of DESS a 3.9 of 5. Keanu as Katu is pretty much perfect. He *is* the alien of our time, after all. The Guardian was some seriously kick ass 1950's space monster shit. I loved it. And Jennifer Connelly is just, well... hot. Cathy Bates did an okay job as Sec. of Def. The pacing was pretty good, I never got bored.
Now the 1.1 deductions are Will Smith's kid. Did he not learn *any* cool acting chops from his parents? John Hamm (from Mad Men) was pretty vanilla. The theme was pretty preachy, even if the ending was slightly ambiguous just the way I like it. Thats about it though.
Keep in mind though that I'm biased towards these things. I even looked the other way On Tom Cruise's presence and Dakota Fanning's incessant screaming in War of the Worlds. I have a fondness for these remakes of sfi/fi from my youth and tend to cut these remakes some slack *because* the originals were so gawdy in the first place. Normal people would probably give DESS a 3.2 - 3.5.
